Painful Hands during cycling

Why pain in your hands can be a problem

Protecting the Hands for Better Riding Comfort

The hands control the bike – but constant pressure can quickly lead to discomfort. Understanding the causes makes it possible to find targeted solutions to prevent pain and maintain long-term control of the bike.

We make the difference

Where does the problem lie?

The hands play a central role in cycling: steering, braking, and ensuring a secure grip on the handlebars. However, during the entire ride, continuous forces act on the hands and fingers. This constant pressure can irritate nerves, cause pain, and limit mobility. The result: reduced comfort – and in the worst case, compromised control and safety. SQlab relies on ergonomic solutions that reduce pressure, support hand function, and thereby improve riding comfort and safety. Because cycling is only truly enjoyable with healthy hands.

Our Solution

SQlab Lab 2025 Vermessung Measurement

Grip Width Measurement

Determine your grip size quickly and easily

For this reason, SQlab has developed a method to determine the optimal grip size. Grip size is measured from the tip of the middle finger to the base of the thumb. Grip sizes differ in diameter, length, and shape. Depending on the model, our bicycle grips are available in up to four different sizes.

Choosing the right grip shape

High pressure on the outside of the hand

A round grip may sound comfortable, but it only provides a small contact surface. The pressure is usually extremely high on the outside of the palm. Here runs the ulnar nerve, which supplies the two little fingers. The consequences are pressure pain and numbness on the little finger and ring finger. The SQlab grip concept: flattened at the top and pulled forward and back so that the surface area is as large as possible, depending on the riding style. This allows the fingers to enclose the grip securely and the pressure on the hand is distributed evenly.

Choosing the right handlebar

Numbness in the index, middle or thumb

The cause of painful hands and numbness in the index, middle or thumb is an overstretched wrist, which can constrict the carpal tunnel. This “kink” is usually caused by handlebars that are too straight, with too little bend towards the back (backsweep). The backsweep means that the wrist is less overstretched, the carpal tunnel is no longer constricted and thus the supply to the hand is improved. This minimizes the risk of numb fingers.
