Numbness in Hands and Fingers during cycling

Numbness in the hands and fingers is a common problem for cyclists and can severely impair the riding experience. These uncomfortable sensations usually arise from pressure on nerves and blood vessels, often caused by unfavorable hand positions or unsuitable grips. Particularly affected are the carpal tunnel exit and the ulnar nerve, which is often exacerbated by non-ergonomic products, as these exert increased pressure. At SQlab, we develop targeted solutions to address this issue.

Numbness of the hands

Our ergonomic grips are designed to provide optimal pressure distribution and to reduce pressure on sensitive nerves. In addition, we use a sophisticated pressure measurement system to analyze pressure distribution during product development. With these findings, we optimize our grips and saddles to minimize pressure on critical areas. In this way, SQlab ensures that cyclists can enjoy a comfortable and pain-free riding experience even over long distances.

Numbness in the ring and the little finger

Excessive pressure on the outside of the hand often causes numbness in the ring finger and little finger. To reduce this pressure, SQlab has designed the contact surface of the grips to be as large as possible, so that the pressure is optimally distributed and the ulnar nerve is relieved. For city and trekking bikes, the relief wing offers additional support and relief: it ensures an ideal hand position and minimizes the pressure on the sensitive areas of the hand.

Numbness in the index finger, middle finger or thumb

The cause of numbness in the index, middle or thumb is an overstretched wrist, which can constrict the carpal tunnel. This “kink” is usually caused by handlebars that are too straight, with too little bend towards the back (backsweep). With the backsweep, the wrist is less overstretched, the carpal tunnel is no longer constricted and thus the supply to the hand is improved. The risk of numb fingers is minimized.

Pressure on nerves in the carpal tunnel

The cause is excessive pressure on the exit of the carpal tunnel, often caused by relief wings that relieve the ulnar nerve but, under unfavorable circumstances, put pressure on the median nerve. Ergonomic grips do not necessarily provide relief for the carpal tunnel, especially the exit of the carpal tunnel. We have paid particular attention to this point. The relief wing must be placed as far out as possible to keep the carpal tunnel exit largely free and to reduce pressure.
