Saddle ergonomics

The saddle width system

Similar to shoe size, the sit bone distance is different for everyone. That is why SQlab offers saddles in different widths to suit the individual anatomy. The sit bone distance can either be measured directly at a local SQlab specialist dealer or conveniently at home with the Family and Friends set. Depending on the riding position and area of use, a certain number of centimetres are added to the determined sit bone width to obtain the optimum saddle width. The more upright the riding position, the wider the saddle needs to be in order to provide as much contact surface as possible.

How to find the right saddle width

Whether you're a professional cyclist or a casual rider, the right saddle is crucial for your riding experience. With our sit bone measurement, you can quickly and easily find the perfect saddle for your needs. It only takes a few seconds to determine the right saddle, either at home or in a specialist shop.

SQlab step saddle concept

The SQlab saddles are all based on the stepped system, which distributes the pressure evenly on the sit bones and allows for a more comfortable ride. The two-stage wave shape of the saddle adapts to the usually bulbous ischial branches and at the same time relieves the sensitive perineal area. The recess in the middle of the saddle ensures that the blood and nerve supply is optimally maintained. The dip in the middle provides even more space and less pressure in the perineal area. Due to the step system, there is more pressure on the sit bones than they are used to, so a certain familiarization phase is necessary. We recommend 3-4 moderate tours of 30-40 km so that the sit bones can get used to the new load.

Effective against numbness

Numbness in the perineal area is often the result of insufficient pressure relief on sensitive nerves and blood vessels. The shape of the stepped saddle enables a targeted weight transfer to the sit bones, which can significantly reduce pressure peaks on sensitive areas. The combination of ergonomic shape and intelligent saddle geometry improves blood flow in these areas, which significantly reduces the occurrence of numbness. Clinical studies show that the SQlab saddle shape improves blood flow in the genital area by an average of 64%. Numbness is eliminated in 82% of test subjects, while pain in the sit bone area is reduced by 71%.

The active System

to relieve the intervertebral discs and sit bones.

This technology is based on the anatomy of the human pelvis. When walking, the pelvis tilts with every step and the spine reacts to this with a compensatory movement in the opposite direction. This natural dynamic is known as pelvic rocking.

In order to relieve and protect the intervertebral discs and facet joints, it is important to maintain this physiological pelvic movement when cycling.

The SQlab active saddle technology ensures that the saddle easily follows the pedaling movement. This mobilizes the intervertebral discs and minimizes pressure on the sit bones. In the sporty saddle models, the damping can be regulated using the three elastomers supplied and adjusted according to personal preference. The active Comfort technology, on the other hand, is adjusted using the switch function. Here you can choose between the standard active movement and the high active movement in just one turn.

Differences between City and Mountainbikes

The active technology is available for every riding style. The models for city bikes have the active switch function, which allows the horizontal movement of the saddle to be adjusted in two stages. In the mountain bike and road bike saddles with active technology, the strength of the lateral movement can be adjusted to the rider's weight using the three elastomers supplied.
