Back pain while cycling

Back pain is a common problem that is often caused by pressure on the lower back. In particular, the static sitting position on the bike during longer rides can lead to tension and pain. The lower back is under constant strain as the spine remains in a bent forward position and the body has to be stabilized to maintain balance. This problem is similar to the strain caused by prolonged sitting. The monotonous posture and the lack of changes in position lead to an uneven distribution of forces on the muscles and the spine. The pressure in the lower back increases, which can lead to muscular imbalances and pain in the long term.

Prevention

active - Technology

The human body is made for movement. SQlab’s active saddle technology supports the natural lateral motion of the pelvis while pedaling—mimicking the body’s walking mechanics. This movement relieves pressure on the lower spine, discs, and facet joints, helping reduce strain and prevent back pain for more comfort on every ride.

How it works

active - technology in detail

The active technology is based on scientific findings in spinal disc and spinal column therapy. In close cooperation with Dr. Markus Knöringer, an experienced sports physician and expert in this field, we have developed the active technology for our bicycle saddles.

Tailored comfort for every ride

SQlab’s active technology is available in tailored versions for all types of riding:

  • City Bikes: Models with the active switch function allow easy two-stage adjustment of lateral saddle movement—providing personalized comfort for everyday use.

  • MTB & Road Bikes: The lateral movement can be individually adjusted to the rider’s weight using the three included elastomers—ensuring optimal performance and maximum ergonomics on sporty rides.

Switch Function

Custom Comfort

The SQlab active switch function on the 602 active 2.1 and 621 active 2.1 models allows for easy, two-stage adjustment of the saddle’s lateral movement. With a simple twist of the lever, the saddle adapts to your individual comfort needs—offering greater pelvic mobility, noticeable spinal relief, and a back-friendly seating position for long rides and daily commutes.

Healthy Spine by Ergonomics

By combining medical know-how and state-of-the-art technology, the saddles with active technology offer targeted support for the spine and spinal discs when cycling. Dr. Knöringer's expertise has enabled us to integrate ergonomic approaches that promote both the comfort and health of cyclists. In collaboration with Dr. Markus Knöringer, MD, we have developed the SQlab back primer for targeted strengthening of the back muscles.
