Soft saddle myth

The right pad for every riding style

SQlab's chamois concept is designed for comfort and support while cycling. Unlike traditional soft pads, SQlab relies on thin, taut pads with special orthopedic materials that reduce shear forces and distribute pressure evenly. These pads are only 4 to 8 mm thick and breathable, so they maintain natural freedom of movement and minimize friction. The pads, such as the SQ-Pad 12R for road cyclists, provide comfort over long distances and are suitable for different sitting positions and riding styles.

Firm padding: more comfort, less pressure

Firm padding in cycling shorts is crucial to prevent the sit bones from “sinking in”, which can happen if the padding is too soft. When the sit bones sink deep into the padding, pressure is placed on the surrounding blood vessels and nerves, which can restrict blood flow and cause numbness or pain. Firmer padding helps to avoid these compression effects and ensures that pressure is distributed evenly. This provides better relief and prevents pressure points from developing into discomfort or long-term problems.

Universal fit for firm, comfortable support

The SQ-Pads from SQlab are designed to fit all sit bone widths. For narrower sit bones, the padding extends a little over the sides, but thanks to the thin padding (4-8 mm), this is hardly bothersome. This extra width even has an advantage: it ensures that the sit bones remain stable on the pad during pedaling movements, without slipping inwards.

What causes pain in the sit bones?

Shear-Forces

Aching sit bones are the first to get used to the strain – this is quite normal. The pain here arises at the periosteum, where the pressure is less of a problem than the shear forces caused by the pedaling movement. The slight but constant movement of the pelvis on the saddle causes painful shear forces on the periosteum.
